Can You Feel My Pain©

Do people whisper when you walk into a room? Do people choose not to serve you if you want to eat in their establishment? Do clerks stick to you like glue when you go shopping? Do people make fun of your hair? Do people ask you if your blood is the same color as theirs? Sometimes the pain I feel is so overwhelming? I’m shocked and don’t know what to do or say? Have you ever been told to “go home, you’re not wanted here”, but you are already home and this is the only home you’ve ever known? How about having someone ask you? If you think you’re better than they are because, your English is actually better than their own. There’s always something said. There’s always a shooting glance. There’s always the waiting in line even though there’s no one in front of you. I let it all roll off my back. I tell myself it doesn’t matter. I know it’s just their ignorance. I know they must feel shame. I wonder if they will ever apologize. Then suddenly I no longer care. Because I both realize and remember. That no matter whatever anyone thinks. I know I was made this way for a reason. I must hold my head high. I must hold on to who and what I am and make pride my partner in crime. It should no longer matter if they can feel my pain.
