What is the most vivid dream you ever woke up from and did it scare you, if so, why?
The night was stifling🌃
air thick as grief,
pressing against my lungs
until sleep came only in fragments.
Now, writing this,
I wonder if the heat loosened the veil
between dreaming
and whatever lies just beside it.
I woke to a bang🖤
a universe-splitting crack
I could hardly decipher
with the quarter-hearing I have left.
But loud enough
to rip me into waking.
A hole yawned through our house.
Smoke. Splinters.
And somehow
my whole family gathered around me🖤
even the ones long gone
to other homes, other lives.
All of us pulled into the same impossible moment.
Beside me stood a man
insisting he was my husband.
I had never seen his face,
yet his hand tugged at mine
with a terrible familiarity.
“Come🕰hurry.
They’re coming.”
But who were they?
Before I could speak,
the sky thickened with wings🖤
ginormous beasts
descending like shadows made of hunger.
And then🌌
without running, without knowing🖤
we were suddenly
deep underground.
A shelter carved from fear and foresight,
lights humming softly
as if we had been expected.
Debris tangled in our hair.
Cuts stinging.
But we were whole.
Together.
Safe🛏
or the closest thing to it.
Then another bang🖤
a single note struck
between worlds🖤
and I opened my eyes
in my bathroom,
cool tile beneath my feet,
as though none of it
had ever happened.
So tell me🖤
did I fall asleep
in that small square of quiet,
or did I walk myself there
still dreaming?
Or maybe☹
just maybe👁️🗨️
I woke from one reality
into another,
and only the echoes followed me back.
