What part of your routine do you always try to skip if you can?
Every morning,
it stares at me —
rolled tight in the corner,
like a secret I keep avoiding.
I promise it,
“Tomorrow, I’ll stretch.
Tomorrow, I’ll bend.”
But tomorrow has stiff knees too.
My back protests before I start,
my knees join in the chorus,
and the floor feels farther away
than it used to.
Still, I walk —
circles around the block,
laps through the living room,
up and down three flights of stairs,
and more on laundry days —
laundry strapped to my back
in a great bulky pack,
the mat whispering, “That counts.”
Because motion is motion,
even if it’s not graceful.
The mat waits patiently,
a flat reminder
that even small surrenders
can be forgiven,
as long as we keep moving
in whatever way we can.
