Being alone turned out to be far lonelier than she had imagined. Every room stood silent and bare — no pets, no family, no friends. Not even the hum of a TV or the murmur of a radio to break the stillness. No birds outside, no passing cars, no muffled conversations. Just complete, lifeless quiet. The silence grew so overwhelming that she suddenly felt an urge to scream, just to hear her voice echo off the walls. As soon as she did, the quiet transformed into something else — noise. The front door flew open, an EMT rushing in to check if everything was alright. Flushed with embarrassment, she confessed her fear of being alone. He chuckled, not at her, but because he’d done the exact same thing only a week ago.
