Who are the biggest influences in your life?
My dad is the man who saw a woman who needed to be loved. A woman who struggled to support her family while the father of her children did nothing. My dad rescued my mom from her failed marriage. Saving her and her four children. Melding our family together with another child between them. A farmer since childhood turned property owner and landlord. Harvard educated as a biochemist. Former silver coal miner. A man of rules, religion, and discipline. While the rules were often hard to follow, they helped mold me into my current self.
My mom was a woman of conviction and an upstanding member of the community. Mourned by many when she became lost to us. Even though she now sings with the angels, all the skills that she taught me hold me together as a mother. Despite her ability to show her love for some of us, she made up for it by loving others. She was determined to accept all others despite their misfortune or convictions.
Sometimes the best lessons are learned by those who teach without feeling, by those who have a firmer upper hand. Sometimes a lesson teaches you all that you should not do, despite what you have learned.
Sometimes when you have to open your eyes to see the truth you have to leave your love behind to move forward.
Thank you, Mom & Dad, for teaching me how to feel and how not to feel. While confusing at first the lesson is what holds me together till this day.
Thank You, Mom & Dad©
